'Mr Williams in knowledgeable and delectable top form' Sunday Times
During the festive period, the cathedral town of Litchester is more used to carols by candlelight than flames and intrigue. However, when the proposed sale of the town's 1225 copy of the Magna Carta causes a dispute between members of the cathedral chapter, there are far-reaching consequences.
Merchant banker Mark Treasure has been invited down to arbitrate the vicious disagreement, but finds himself dealing with more than he bargained for when the Dean's verger is discovered murdered, his body left to burn along with the ecclesiastical library.
As Treasure's investigation progresses and the evidence points to mayhem and skulduggery, he discovers that Litchester, once a town associated with peace and harmony, is in fact full of sins and secrets . . .

In his distinctively urbane and witty fashion, the British author chronicles again the adventures of London banker Mark Treasure, star of Williams's outstanding mystery series (Advertise for Treasure; Wedding Treasure. Treasure arrives in Litchester Cathedral Close after a fire destroys the library, burning the precious "exemplification'' (copy) of the Magna Carta, dated 1225, and killing the verger. The tragedy makes moot the hotly argued issue of whether the document should be soldto maintain the church's staff and buildingsor kept as Litchester's precious heritage. Another death fixes Treasure's suspicions on a possible case of arson and murder, even on a doubt about the Magna Carta's authenticity. As a result of the amateur sleuth's questioning, startling facts concerning the many people involved emerge and give Treasure evidence that closes the case.
